The pro wrestling business has plenty of sad stories in it. Reid Flair’s passing away is certainly up there with one of the most tragic. Ric Flair’s son, Reid Flair’s passing was certainly one of the most tragic deaths in professional wrestling.
Reid passed away in 2013 due to a drug overdose. It was a time of shock and everyone mourned the loss, especially his father Ric Flair. Reid’s death was such a sad one, Charlotte Flair also mourned him for very long time; everyone was touched, everyone felt the pain of the death of the young lad.
While speaking to Wrestling Inc, Ric Flair revealed something he never talked about before: the last text message he ever received from his son.
“I came back from Japan and I had a blood clot in my leg. They won’t let me leave the hospital but I said I have to leave as my son is only home for a couple of days. We were going on the road,” said Flair. “They released me to go to the doctor’s office and he put me on blood thinners.
“My son sends me a text, saying, ‘Dad what would this family be [without you]? You need to be here for all of us.’ And that night he died. I’ve never told anyone that story, except [my wife] Wendy.”
Reid Flair had a lot of potential, but personal issues and bad decisions seemed to follow him. Sadly, the final text message he ever sent his father was one advising against risky behavior when he died that night.
Nature Boy Ric Flair’s Son, Reid, Dies at Age 25
Reid Flair, the young son of the legendary Ric Flair, has passed away at just 25 years old. Reid had participated in storylines as a teenager with his father in the latter days of WCW and was even signed to a WWE Developmental deal for a short period.
Most recently Reid had worked a show in Japan, tagging with his old man. He had battled drug addiction. In 2009 he was arrested for heroin possession. Today, PWInsider reported that Reid had passed away without noting a cause of death.
Reid was seen in the latter days of WCW, where both he and his father had heads shaved as part of an angle where Ric feuded with Vince Russo. Reid later began training as a pro wrestler under Bobby Eaton and George South, but personal issues, including a heroin arrest, sidetracked what was expected to be instant stardom for Reid, who had an excellent amateur pedigree.
At one point, he was slated to debut with Ring of Honor when the promotion was owned by Cary Silkin, but the arrest caused ROH to back off on those plans. That led to the beginning of the end of their relationship with Ric Flair.
This is devastating news for the entire wrestling industry. Reid had not accomplished much personally as a professional wrestler, but has been around the business his entire life. Since he was very young, he traveled regularly with his father and surely came in contact with the who’s who of the wrestling industry.
