Bret HartWWE Hall of Famer Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart recently sat down with WWE Backstage, in a rare interview. He spoke about his rival, and also one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Hart was joined by former WWE Superstar CM Punk, who is part of the Backstage crew.

“Steve [Austin] was famously fired by Eric Bischoff from the WCW, and you were someone who went to Vince McMahon and said ‘This guy is somebody you need to take a look at.’ What were the things in Steve Austin that you saw, that made you want him to work for WWE and want to wrestle him?” enquired CM Punk.

Hart reminisced about how he had managed to bring Steve Austin into the WWE with Vince. “I remember when he eventually went to ECW, I remember getting mad and went to Vince and said ‘Why would you let this guy go to ECW?’

“Because we were looking for new faces and new guys. I couldn’t believe that he became available, and nobody tried to get him.

“Now he’s working for ECW. A week later he was in the WWE dressing room. I think I shook the tree a little bit, and he ended taking up the WWE,” said Hart.

The two legends fought at SummerSlam 1996, which was an absolutely breathtaking match. The two best wrestlers in the works absolutely went at each other, putting on a stunning show for the fans.

Punk asked his idol about that famous match, “I remember SummerSlam 1996 when you came back and cut a very meaningful promo, because you said ‘I accept the challenge of the best wrestler in the world Steve Austin’. Is Steve Austin your best dance partner?”

Hart then revealed who his favorite wrestlers were. He spoke fondly of Shawn Michaels and a couple of other Superstars, “I had great chemistry with Mr perfect. I could wrestle him in my sleep and have a 5-star match.
