WWE star Nikki Bella has opened up about her split from John Cena after the couple separated just weeks before their wedding.
Nikki and Cena – two of WWE’s biggest stars – had been together for six years when they decided to call time on the relationship.
The couple were due to tie the knot last month but the wedding was axed just weeks before the ceremony in Mexico.
Rumours had been running wild it was Cena who did the jilting, but in her latest interview Nikki insisted it her who called time on the relationship.
The two-time WWE Divas claimed she got “cold feet” and said she is “at a period of my life that I really need to work on me”.
Cena and Nikki’s break-up is being revealed in the latest season of their reality show Total Bellas.
Nikki even left the door open for the couple to get back together and even get married, in the interview with Life & Style.
She said the wedding didn’t “feel right” and said she feared she might have “hesitation and regret”.
The 34-year-old also denied Cena’s reluctance to have kids played a part in the break-up.
Cena and Nikki had been together since 2012 and got engaged in front of 70,000 wrestling fans at WrestleMania 34.
Nikki said: “I’m just in a period of my life that I really need to work on me.
“A healthy me is a healthy us.”
Both Cena and Nikki now appear part-time with the WWE, with the 16-time world champion (John Cena) focusing on his career in Hollywood.
The couple announced they split on April 15 as they were due to wed in May 5.
Earlier this week, Nikki lashed out at “lies” after a series of reports her and John are “basically back together”.
Sources said the axing of the wedding was just “wake-up call” for the couple as they continued to disagree over a having kids.
She took to Twitter and blasted the articles as “incorrect” and said they “make a girl want to hide”.
Rumours have also been claiming the couple’s entire break-up might have been a publicity stunt for the WWE and Total Bellas.Nikki has kept hold of her wedding dress and hopes one-day to wear it – saying “honestly, I think that John and I will probably end up together”.
She said: “If it doesn’t feel right, if there is any type of hesitation, you have to figure it out and not be afraid.”
The star added: “I just didn’t want to walk down that aisle and give those vows and have hesitation or have regret.
“The day I give those vows, I truly want to be with that person until death do us part, and I have that hope for John and I. I really do.
“But right now I just have to deal with the issues that gave me cold feet.”
